Youth Empowerment through Skills

HOPE’87 Bangladesh has been working with the aim to empower youth, especially girls and young women, by strengthening their skills and voices for economic self-reliance to take a leadership role in poverty alleviation initiatives in Tangail district and Dhaka, the YES Center project has implemented by HOPE’87-Bangladesh and BASA with the support of ESPRIT and in collaboration with the YOU Foundation- Education for Children in Need. This project also works for Economic empowerment of youth, especially of girls and young women, with a particular scope of decent employment is the major initiative of this project. On May in 2018 in Tangail district was arranged an inaugural ceremony of the project by the management of BASA and HOPE’87 Bangladesh. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Mirzapur Upazila was present as the chief guest while Mr. Zahid Abed, Head of Sourcing Bangladesh of ESPRIT was present as Honorable guest of the program. Mr. Md. Rezaul Karim, Country Representative of HOPE’87-Bangladesh also participated as special guest.

achieving The project was started in May 2018 in both Tangail and Dhaka and completed on 30th April 2020. For the aim of the project, the YES Centre is providing seven types of separate trainings such as ICT (computer) training, graphic design, proficiency in English, industrial sewing machine operator, fashion design and tailoring, beauty-cosmetics and wellness and hotel management course to 525 youths in order to improve their technical and managerial knowledge skills and to support decent employment. A total number of 525 youths will also receive life skills training. Among them 80% will be female participants. The project will also arrange the advocacy campaign for ensuring employment opportunities and to support female participation in economic activities. Besides this, several initiatives like a round-table meeting and a job fair will further contribute to ensure the entrance of trainees into the job market. A total of 525 youth were registered both in Tangail and in Dhaka, who wanted to participate in the classes. Among them 434 youth were selected for participating in 6 management training. During the project period, 434 students participated in 6 management skills development trainings. 434 successful students of 6 management skills training received certificates. From the beginning of the project 150 students received healthcare support right and needed medication was provided together with doctor’s prescriptions as well as other general medical treatment was offered once a week by the HOPE’87-Bangladesh Weekly Health Camp. Two blogger groups, each made up of 46 YES Tangail trainees, were trained and motivated. In June 2019, the "YES-Tangail Youth Group" launched an online blog. Bloggers published some blogs over the project's duration. Furthermore, 520 school students of secondary schools in Dhaka received Disaster Risk Reduction training, among them 182 were male and 338 were female. YES Center Tangail also organized a simulation session on disaster risk reduction for 308 students among them 131 were male and 177 were female and youths in collaboration with the Fire Brigade and Civil Defense Force of Tangail. A total of 434 youths also received life skills development training in both YES Center Dhaka and YES Center Tangail. Among the total number of students 347 were female and 87 were male. And also a total of 96 youths also participated in Entrepreneurship Development training courses during the project period. Among them 77 were female and 19 were male.
